About Sump Tanks

WHAT IS A SUMP TANK?

A Sump Tank is an industrial storage tank or pit used to collect, settle, and temporarily store liquids, such as coolant, slurry, wastewater, oil-water mix, or filtrate, before they are pumped, filtered, or recirculated. It plays a key role in liquid handling and coolant recovery systems.

WORKING PRINCIPLE

  • Liquid (e.g., dirty coolant, water, slurry) flows by gravity into the sump tank.
  • The tank allows heavier particles to settle (sedimentation zone).
  • Liquid may pass through baffles, strainers, or mesh filters.
  • Cleaned or semi-cleaned fluid is pumped out using a submerged or external pump.
  • Oil skimmer or filter units can be mounted to further separate oil and solid impurities.

APPLICATIONS

Machine Tool Industry:

  • Coolant collection from CNC/VMC machines
  • Dirty coolant holding before filtration

ETP/STP and Industrial Wastewater:

  • Sludge and wastewater collection
  • Sedimentation and equalization tank

Process Plants:

  • Buffer tank for pumping or circulation
  • Intermediate tank in fluid transfer lines

 Oil Separation:

  • Part of oil-water separator skid
  • Integrated with oil skimmer or magnetic separator
ADVANTAGES
  • Simple, durable construction
  • Easy to customize based on plant layout
  • Acts as a primary filtration and sedimentation zone
  • Integrates easily with pumps, filters, skimmers, agitators
  • Helps maintain continuous machine operation by collecting overflow

LIMITATIONS

  • Sediment buildup requires periodic cleaning
  • May require space below floor (if underground)
  • Needs proper material selection for corrosive liquids
